Our research interests are focused at the interface of nanoscale materials and biological systems. At the interface of nanomaterials and biological systems, a new set of biophysicochemical questions related to the identity of nanomaterials (e.g. composition, size, shape and surface chemistry) and their interactions with biological systems (e.g. proteins, DNA, membranes and cells) are emerging. Understanding these interactions have deep implications in the biomedical applications and safe use of nanomaterials. The overall goal of our research is to provide a deeper fundamental understanding of various aspects of nano-bio interface that will enable rational design of functional nanomaterials aiming to improve human health.

Our current research interests include:

  • Nano-bio-interactions: Understanding and manipulating the impact of nanomaterials on actin cytoskeleton and phenotypes of normal and cancer cells.

  • Nano-bio-composites: Exploring functional nanomaterials (e.g. metal-organic frameworks) as encapsulants to preserve the structure and functionality of biomolecules under harsh environmental conditions such as elevated temperatures.

  • Nano-bio-sensors: Developing plasmonic nanobiosensors for large-scale screening of diseases in resource-limited settings.

Join us: We are always looking for self-motivated people interested in functional nanomaterials and nano-bio-interfaces.  Please send your CV to Dr. Congzhou Wang for details on openings.
